I was over the moon with the Marquee, especially once all the decorations were finished and the flowers were in place, it all looked stunning. Just an email to express my appreciation to you all for being part of the Scottish Australian Heritage Council's St Andrew's Day celebration.
We rated a mention on SBS News on Sunday evening where the Pipe Bands were shown at length, and it was commented that Sydney's Scottish community celebrated Scotland's National Day. Footage was shown of the parade of the ‘Bands and Clans' and mention was made that each walked proudly behind their own individual Clan.
The March left Martin Place led by NSW Mounted Police officers. Two very competent Equestrians Snr Constable Lorraine Dutton riding an Australian Stock horse DOCTOR and Constable Sandy Palmer who rode the Australian Thoroughbred PATEZZA, winner of The Doncaster at Randwick in 2005. Our extraordinary MC took over from there and everything just flowed along for everyone's enjoyment.
The Massed Pipe Band display showed not only the talent but the presentation of our finest Australian Pipe Bands which drew comment from our Chief of the Day that he had heard none better in Scotland throughout the GATHERING.
We had twelve new Citizens welcomed as Australians, put at ease and guided into the day by our two past participants and present serving Committee members. I do thank our Guests of Honour for attending the day, their presence there was greatly appreciated and later a warm welcome was given to them by our VIP Hostess and helpers. The Clan Village gave an opportunity for 21 Clans & Scottish Associations to pass out information re membership and family research, it appeared to be well supported all day.
Hyde Park was splendid, and the weather kind, the crowd down slightly from last year, the entertainment fantastic with sound perfected by extraordinary Sound engineers, our yellow jacketed SAHC Marshal's fantastic, our famous raffle basket creator and ticket seller so successful that we raised $1240 on the day. The children's races well organised and this help was appreciated, the Rover's BBQ well supplied and efficiently managed, not a complaint was heard throughout the day.
However my warmest thanks go to those of you who helped me ‘put it together' who put up the tents, took down the tents, loaded and unloaded the cars, toured the areas, help answer the questions, and helped clean up after the event. I can only hope that at the end of the day you were left with a feeling that what you had done was worth all the effort.
With gratitude,
Valerie J Cameron Smith
